How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the length and width of the area to be paved in feet.

2. Set the depth — residential driveways typically use 3–4"; commercial lots 4–6".

3. Optionally enter the price per ton of hot-mix asphalt to get a material cost estimate.

Note: Asphalt is sold by the ton. A standard ton covers about 80 sq ft at 3" depth. Installation labor is separate from material costs.

Real-World Examples

Residential driveway 12×50 ft at 3":
600 sq ft × 0.25 ft × 145 lbs/cu ft ÷ 2000 = 10.9 tons
Parking lot 100×200 ft at 4":
20,000 sq ft × 0.333 ft × 145 ÷ 2000 = 483 tons

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does asphalt cost?

Hot-mix asphalt runs $85–$160 per ton in 2024. Installed (material + labor), residential driveways typically cost $3–$7 per square foot. Prices vary significantly by region.

How thick should a driveway be?

Residential: 3–4" over a 6" compacted gravel base. Heavy-use areas and commercial: 4–6".

When should I sealcoat?

New asphalt should cure for 6–12 months before first sealing. After that, sealcoat every 2–4 years to protect against oxidation and moisture.
