How to Use This Calculator
1
Why protein needs vary
Protein requirements scale with lean body mass and activity level. Sedentary adults need ~1.2g/kg to maintain muscle. Athletes and those building muscle need 1.6–2.2g/kg for optimal muscle protein synthesis. Higher protein also increases satiety, making it valuable for weight loss.
2
Activity level guide
Sedentary: desk job, no planned exercise. Moderate: 2–4 workouts/week including resistance training. Active: 5+ days/week training or physically demanding job. Athlete: competitive sport, multiple daily sessions, or very high volume training.
3
Spread protein through the day
Research shows muscle protein synthesis is maximized when protein is spread across 3–4 meals, each containing 25–40g. Eating all your protein in one meal wastes the excess (you can only stimulate MPS so much per meal). Prioritize protein at each meal before filling in with carbs and fat.
