How to Use This Calculator
1
Why water needs vary by weight
The baseline recommendation is approximately 0.5 oz of water per pound of body weight (30 mL/kg). A 200 lb person needs roughly 100 oz (about 3 liters) at rest, while a 120 lb person needs 60 oz. Body weight is the primary determinant of baseline hydration needs.
2
Activity and climate adjustments
Exercise increases water loss through sweat. Moderate exercise adds ~24 oz/day (3 cups); intense exercise adds ~36 oz/day. Hot or humid weather further increases needs by ~16 oz. These additions are cumulative — a person exercising intensely in heat may need 50+ oz more than their baseline.
3
Spread your intake throughout the day
Drinking all your water at once is less effective than spreading it over the day. A practical approach: drink 16 oz with each meal (3 meals = 48 oz), then sip 8–16 oz between meals. Start the day with 16 oz before coffee to replace overnight fluid loss.
